Exchange 2003 - 2010 Migration - 2 Node

Hi,

I am performing my first exchange migration and I am trying to find it if the below HA configuration will work succesfully.

I have two servers in the same site both runnning CA/HT/MBX roles.

I want to create a DAG for database HA, HT's are already HA (I believe) now my problem is CAS. I don't have a hardware load-balancer nor can I get one, I cannot use WNLB due to servers running all 3 roles but can I use the below? It may not be supported by Microsoft but will it work?

It appears as though the DAG IP address is set up as an IP Address Resource in the Failover Cluster Manager. As a result, that IP address is always either assigned to EXCH1 (my first Exchange box) or EXCH2.

As a test, I created a DNS record to point to the IP address set up by DAG, set up the CAS array and assigned that array to my mailbox. Using that new DNS hostname, clients are able to access all services (OWA, Outlook Anywhere, SMTP, etc.) and in the event I disconnect EXCH1, EXCH2 takes over and clients can still access all services. Since I'm just looking for EXCH2 to take over when EXCH1 fails, it seems like a solid setup. I imagine this is how the IP Address Resource was designed to be used in Failover Clustering, so even though it was set up by DAG I don't see why it cannot also be used as the address in which clients access mail services.

Cannot Add a fourth node to Exchange DAG

Hi all,

First, I will explain about the existing setup.

3 Active Directory Site.

Site 1
-------

Subnet: 192.168.20.0/24
1 Mailbox Server, 1 Client Access Server
Exchange Server 2013 SP1 - Enterprise Edition
OS: Windows Server 2012

Site 2
-------

Subnet: 192.168.30.0/24
1 Mailbox Server, 1 Client Access Server
Exchange Server 2013 SP1 - Enterprise Edition
OS: Windows Server 2012

Site 3
------
Subnet: 192.168.40.0/24
1 Mailbox Server, 1 Client Access Server
Exchange Server 2013 SP1 - Enterprise Edition
OS: Windows Server 2012

All the Mailbox Servers in these three sites are in DAG now.

We are planning to put one server in Amazon as well, for resilience. So, a fourth site has been created in Active Directory and installed Exchange in the Amazon instance.

Site 4
-------
Subnet: 172.32.7.0/24
1 Mailbox Server
Exchange 2013 SP1 - Enterprise Edition
OS: Windows Server 2012 R2

After completing the installation, I tried adding the node to DAG, but it failed. The error message which I get from the setup logs is as below.

The operation wasn't successful because an error was encountered. You may find more details in log file "C:\ExchangeSetupLogs\DagTasks\dagtask_2014-08-04_21-57-20.762_add-databaseavailabiltygroupserver.log".

[2014-08-04T22:03:50] WriteError! Exception = Microsoft.Exchange.Cluster.Replay.DagTaskServerTransientException: A server-side database availability group administrative operation failed with a transient error. Please try the operation again. Error: An error occurred while attempting a cluster operation. Error: Cluster API failed: "AddClusterNode() (MaxPercentage=100) failed with 0x5b4. Error:This operation returned because the timeout period expired" ---> Microsoft.Exchange.Cluster.Shared.ClusterApiException: An error occurred while attempting a cluster operation. Error: Cluster API failed: "AddClusterNode() (MaxPercentage=100) failed with 0x5b4. Error: This operation returned because the timeout period expired" ---> System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: This operation returned because the timeout period expired

All the Exchange Servers have only one Network Adapter for replication and MAPI. Windows Firewall is OFF. TCP Chimney offloading is disabled. CNO permissions set (obviously since there is already 3 nodes in the dag).

Does anyone have any idea why I am not getting the node to be added to the DAG?

Unable to mount restored database

Hi

I am trying to restore a database for the first time in an Exchange 2013 environment following this article

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/ee332351%28v=exchg.150%29.aspx

The database is restored, and in clean shutdown state (recovery is set to true)

However, at Step 5, attempting to mount the restored database fails with:

Exchange 2013 configuration restoration

Good afternoon

I have a question regarding disaster recovery. I have a two node Exchange 2013 environment, both nodes are dual roles CAS/MBX behind a load balanced firewall.

The disaster recovery scenario I am interested in refers to configuration rather than mailbox data recovery. If I or another team member were to make some disasterous configuration changes that caused mail to stop flowing or other problems, would an authoritative system state restore of a Domain Controller from a backup prior to the configuration changes that caused the problems be sufficient to change the configuration back to it's working state?

Kind regards

File Share Witness Failed

Hello. I have two Exchange 2013 CU3 Standard servers in a DAG.  Both servers have both the CAS and Mailboxes roles installed.  The servers are running Server 2012 Standard.  The DAG uses a file share witness server.  The witness server and one Exchange server, which is usually the active server, are on the same subnet in our primary data centre. The second Exchange server is on a different subnet in our backup data centre across town.

My organisation did a test of its datacentre failover capability.  For Exchange, this meant activating the database copies on the server at the backup data centre, and putting the Exchange server at the primary data center into maintenance mode. The co-worker who put the server into maintenance mode reported difficulty in doing that, but is unable to provide details about what exactly happened. After the initial issues, the Exchange server was, however, put into maintenance mode. The witness server was powered off for most of this seven day failover test.

To achieve the failback to normal operations, the Exchange server at the primary data centre was taken out of maintenance mode, and its database copies were activated. The witness server was started up.

The Server 2012 Failover Cluster Manager now reports that the File Share Witness has failed.   When I try to bring the witness online, I am presented with an error message stating the following.

An error occurred while attempting to bring the resource ‘File Share Witness’ online.

                 Error code 0x80070533

The user can’t sign in because this account is currently disabled

Through the Server 2012 Failover Cluster manager, I changed the quorum settings from File Share Witness to Disk Witness. I then tried to change the setting back.  That worked in a previous occurrence of these symptoms, but failed with the following error when I specified the file share path.

Access was denied to the share path.

The Exchange Trusted Subsystem is a member of the local administrators group on the server acting as the witness.

The Cluster Events contain some Event ID 1206 entries that state the following.

The computer object associated with the cluster network name resource 'Cluster Name' could not be updated in domain '<fqdn>'. The error code was 'Resource post online'. The cluster identity '<DAGname$>' may lack permissions required to update the object

Based on the many postings and knowledgebase articles that I have read I gave the disabled DAG computer account Full Control NTFS permissions to the shared folder on the witness server.

I am still unable to bring the File Share Witness online through the Failover Cluster Manager. When I try to change the quorum settings back to File Share Witness, I now get past the point where I specify the shared folder on the witness server. That suggests that the permissions issue has been resolved. I get to the Confirmation box of the quorum configuration wizard. When I click on Next to complete the wizard, I am presented with the following error.

An error was encountered while modifying the quorum settings.

Your cluster quorum settings have not been changed.

There was an error configuring the file share witness '<UNCpathtoshare>'.

The given key was not present in the dictionary.

If you have any insights into this, please share them with me.  Thanks.

CAS Server

AD Site B

Mailbox Server

All Client request for the mailbox hosted on AD Site B mailbox server will be redirected by Site A CAS server to Site B mailbox server

Send email to internal domain fails

Hello,

After almost a year of uninterrupted service Exchange 2013/CU2 failed due most probably to the failure of the secondary DC. During the interruption an outside service is beeing used (MX records have been set accordingly). Exchange 2013 is back again, has been updated to CU5. OWA is working, Outlook clients connect to the server. Mails sent to outside domain are received. When I try to send an e-mail to a recepient of the internal domain, the message is not delivered. After a while this message is delivered to the sender mailbox : Remote server returned '40 4.4.7 Message delayed.

I was under the impression, that internal domain messages should be delivered, even if the MX record is not properly set. Am I right, and if yes, what should be checked in order to get this working properly?

Thank you

eDiscovery failure within DAG when DB moves host

$

I have set up a P.O.C. VM Exchange 2013 SP1 environment over 2 hosts running 1 DAG, hosting 1 DB. Both servers have CAS and MB roles within a 2008 domain and share a single namespace.

I installed Server1, set up some test mailboxes. Then installed Server2. Created DAG1 on Server1 and created DB1 in DAG1 and moved all mailboxes into DB1 including arbitration mailboxes. I then set up Server2 as other host for DB1.

All is fine, losing Server1 causes failover to Server2 mailboxes all still work. Moving the DB1 from host to host works fine, mail still sent/received and Outlook connects. However......

eDiscovery fails if Server2 hosts DAG. Searches get queued and won't start until I move DB1 back to Server1. I believe this is due to the SA mailboxes, but they are in DB1 too and should have failed-over. get-mailbox -arbitration shows them in the DAG, but also shows them as attached to Server1? Surely they shouldn't be listed as attached to any server?

We are looking to deploy a fluid Exchange system across 4 hosts in 2 geographical locations and eDiscovery will be a LARGE factor in this. I need to ensure eDiscovery and Legal Hold will be available 24/7. Any ideas?

Unable to receive external mails when doing a failover to DR site

Hi Guys,

Need you help on this.

We have Exchange 2010 with 2 CAS/HUB and 2 DAG server in production and the same number of CAS/HUB and DAG in the DR site.

Whenever we failover to the DR site, we are unable to receive external mails but we are able to send to external emails. Internal mails are ok.

When we check the queue viewer all external mails are stuck in the 2 production CAS/HUB servers. Even after we normalize the server we can receive the external mails but the mails in queue are still stuck. we need to restart the exchange services for the CAS/HUB server and the stuck mails will flow.

Any idea on how to resolve this issue?

Thanks a lot.

VMware vCloud Load Balancing SSL / HTTP

Hi,

I'm having issues with enabling SSL Health check for my CAS VMs, works fine when I select TCP however doesn't work when I change health check to SSL.  This relates to a previous issue I've raised (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/0b3e2573-99ed-49a0-9fbb-c46a629dcc50/exchange-2013-load-balancing-owaecp?forum=exchangesvravailabilityandisasterrecovery )

TCP is great but would much prefer to do an SSL check instead;

Tests servers using SSLv3 client hello messages. The server is considered valid only when the response contains server hello messages.

This url helps, http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2012/11/load-balancing-using-vcloud-networking-and-security-5-1-edge.html

The only other issue is I have a redirect at root mail.domain.com => mail.domain.com/owa  Could that be the issue because of the re-direct!

Thanks ;)

Exchange 2007 edb to Exchange 2013 - mailbox extraction and mounting

$

Hello everyone, here is my question:

I have a client who has Exchange 2007 running on a Domain Controller which is a Server 2008 and that is the only domain controller in his environment. That said, his domain controller crashed and all the AD data is now lost along with Exchange except the EDB files. He wants to create a new domain controller with Server 2012 and wants to deploy Exchange Server 2013. Since the Domain Name will be the same, is it even possible to extract the mailbox information from Exchange 2007 EDB and attach it with new Exchange Server 2013 and point them to newly created users on Exchange? If yes, how exactly will this work? Thanks in advance.
