Database Replication options between Exchange 2013 and Office 365

$

Is there a way to use the Exchange 2013 and Office 365 Hybrid mode to have a fully redundant Exchange environment?

What I mean by that.

Can mailbox databases/logs from Exchange 2013 be replicated with Office 365 environment so when Office 365 is down users can access Exchange 2013 and never skip a beat? That goes the other way as well.

Or is the Hybrid mode simply an addition to the Exchange 2013 where there are separate mailboxes on Exchange 2013 and separate on Office 365?

Thank you.

Client Issues Following Server Switchover

Hi

We have built a new Exchnage 2013 platform consisting of two CAS servers and 2 Mailbox servers. The databases on the Mailbox servers are configured in a DAG group and we have a Kemp LB sitting in front of the CAS servers to create an array.

The problem we seem to have now is that when we perform a switchover the Outlook clients either hang or display a 'Trying to connect' message. The resolution is close and re-open Outlook or wait at least 30 minutes when the session appears to reconnect. OWA access seems to be unaffected and ActiveSync users seem to be okay too, Just the Outlook clients.

Should this happen or should system handle it better. I've read a lot of forum entries from 2010 Exchange system where people mention changes to RPCClientAccessServer and configuring a CASArray with New-ClientAccessArray but I believe that these aren't relevent to Exchange 2013 now?

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Exchange 2010 CAS to DAG

In this scenario how does a CAS server know which Mailbox server is hosting the users mailbox.

3 mailbox servers, hosting 3 mailbox databases across a DAG with each server hosting one active mailbox database and one passive database.

I understand that the active manager notifies the CAS as to which server is hosting which Active database and I understand how a users contacts the CAS\CAS array. However if the user is on Mailbox database 3 on Mail server 3 how does the CAS discover which database the user belongs to?

Hi all,

I am trying to recover my lab Exchange 2013 server after removing a component of IIS messed all IIS functions, including all virtual directories.

The server is running on Hyper-V so I have removed and rebuilt the OS disk whilst the Exchange data resides on a separate disk. I've reset the computer account in AD and then run the command:

setup /m:recoverserver /targetdir:"d:\Program Files\Microsoft Exchange\v15" /DoNotStartTransport /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms

I have now done this a number of times and on each occasion it fails when attempting to start the Microsoft Exchange Transport Submission service. The error in the event log is as follows:

HI, is there any clear documentation on how to use a DNS A (and possible C-name)  record pointing to a VIP that load balances between 2 Exchange DAG sites that allow for seemless mobile device (android, iphone, windows mobile) failover ?  Is there another way to accomplish this without using load balanced VIP?

Thank you

Site Resiliency with Active/Active Multiple DAG

$

Dear Team,

Here's the scenario I'm trying to familiarize with. Say, there are two Datacenters, and it is required to have Exchange distributed across both, so i believe it is required to have Active Active/Active Scenario with DAG. Since the downside with WAN failure i understand it is best to have Multiple DAG environment as well.

Now here, according to what i understood the server allocation would be as,

Now my concerns are;

  1. How can I have External routing for mails to both Datacenter sites .
  2. I believe since I cant extend the CAS to both sites I need to go with two CAS Arrays, therefore two namespaces are required. In this case say;
    Site A: ExternalURL - maila.contoso.com
    User email - user@contoso.com

    Site B: ExternalURL - mailb.contoso.com
    User email - user@contoso.com

  3. Is the above correct? Can I use the same <user>@contoso.com smtp address for all users distributed across both data centers?
  4. If No 3 is possible, then how does the email flow happens, let's say email comes to user inDatacenter A, how does the mail flow happen?
  5. What happens when there's a Datacenter Failure? Datacenter A goes down, what fail-over modules are automatic and what are manual?
  6. Please explain about CAS use and failover.

I'm not quite familiar with the Active/Active scenarios, so any additional tips and suggestions are quite appreciated.

Thank You.
Chris!

Multiple DAG and Server Allocation for Active/Active environment

$

Hi team,

If there are two datacenter sites and I need to enable Active/Active with Multiple DAG implementation, can someone please explain me if the following Mailbox Server Placement is correct?

I need to know if it's possible to host the Two databases within the Two DAGs in the 4 Servers with CAS collocated as shown above.

Why I'm concerned on this is, when I use the Exchange 2013 Calculator and the below inputs, the Role requirement page gives a total of 8 servers for Mailbox role. I thought I can achieve this by using 4 total across both datacenters(2 + 2 Servers hosting the 2 Database Availability Groups pretty much as shown in the above image) What am I missing here.

Thank You,
Chris!

What happens if the CNO object is unavailable in an Exchange DAG

$

According to my understanding, a Database Availability Group uses Windows Failover Clustering which uses a CNO (Cluster Name Object) for all communications within the cluster.

If our primary NY datacenter goes down the virtual IP will not be available anywhere else, meaning the CNO is gone. So what exactly happens now that the other cluster members can't communicate... Can the passive database be activated elsewhere?

Multi Site DAG Configuration Quetion RE: Stopping DAG Members in Failover Site

$

Hello,

I have my DAG spread over 2 Datacenters using 2 AD sites with DAC mode enabled.  I am on Exchange 2010 SP3.

Site 1 (Primary):

EXMB01, EXMB02 with FSW.

Site 2 (Cutover DR Site):

EXMB03, EXMB04 with Alternate FSW.

EXMB01, EXMB02 and EXMB03 all have database copies.  EXMB4 is just installed as an extra voting member so that I can maintain quorum.

I leave the Acitive Directory Site for the DR location stopped (i.e. Stop-DatabaseAvailabilityGroup DAG01 –ActiveDirectorySite Failover)

My question is about stopping mailbox servers at Site 2.  I've read that EXMB03 and EXMB04 should remain stopped until it is time to cutover to the DR site (i.e. Stop-DatabaseAvailabilityGroup DAG01 –MailboxServer EXMB03).   Wouldn't stopping these servers result in a loss of quorum if one of the 3 voting members in Site 1 (primary) goes down since by stopping them they are in the status of "Down" in the Failover Cluster ?

Can anyone expand on the implications of leaving them started or stopped?

Exchange 2013 DNS Round Robin Help

$

Hello

I am going to deploy Exchange 2013.

DC:2008R2

Server01:MBX+CAS - Server 2012 Standard + Exchange 2013

Server02:MBX+CAS - Server 2012 Standard + Exchange 2013

DAG(MBX) and HA with CAS

Well Windows NLB Won't work and a third party load balance solution is not an option right now.

So I'm wondering if DNS Round Robin would work with my setup?

I know that DNS Round Robin is not a good option because it wont detect if the server is down, (more manual work for the administrators) but thats fine, if we find out that the Clients can't connect we can manualy configure so the traffic goes from Server01 to Server02.

how about the OWA and other things like ECP, will DNS Round Robin notice that one of the Virtual Directories is down?

can I set up DNS Round robin with my configuration? and a good guide for it if someone have?

Thank alot for your Help

Exchange 2010- Changes to Cross site CAS connectivity in SP2 RU3 - Impact on datacenter outage?

Hi,

I read through this article by Ross:

blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2012/05/30/rpc-client-access-cross-site-connectivity-changes.aspx

I am having trouble understanding the effect this would have in a datacenter outage scenario.

Using the example environment in the article:

Previously (before RU3) if the primary site went offline (mailbox and CAS), the standby copies would become active, but clients would lose connectivity until  RPCClientAccessServer attribute for each failed over DAG database was updated and replicated through AD to point to the new CAS server.

Now after RU3, if a datacenter outage occurred, would the clients find the standby CAS using autodiscover, and the standby CAS would accept the connections due to AllowCrossSiteRPCClientAccess being $false for the DAG, therefore, no need to update RPCClientAccessServer? and no need to wait for AD replication to get client connectivity back?

I also assume due to  this AllowCrossSiteRPCClientAccess attribute being $false, when patching is occuring in the primary, and DB's are failed over (the primary CAS is still online), users are now being prompted to restart outlook even though the primary CAS is available, whereas previously it was unnoticeable due to cross-site CAS? This would be an acceptable compromise if the behavior for datacenter outages is correct!

Sorry this is in 2013 discussion, I could not find a forum for it in exchange server forum category

Windows backup purges the log files of Exchange 2010 Database which is not selected for backup

I have Exchange 2010 SP3 Server.

I have 2 Mailbox Databases on the D: drive , where exchange is installed on C: drive

Both the Database on MBX1 and MBX2 folder under D: drive root

Both the databases have about 1000 log files

I took backup of the MBX1 database alone by selecting only that folder during Windows backup of Exchange

I selected VSSFull mode so that logs can be purged

But what i noticed is that logs of both the Databases are purged

Why windows backup is purging the logs of MBX2 which i did not select during backup?

Exchange 2013 DAG Creation makes Replication Service Crashes

Hi All,

I'm having a weird issue with Exchange Server 2013. My Environment is as the following:-

Two CAS Servers Load Balanced using NLB and Two Mail Box Servers for DAG.

I pre-staged the CNO and assigned the Appropriate Permission for the First Node .

then i went to EAC and Created the DAG Normally after that i added the first Node as the First DAG member.

then suddenly in the first node every couple of minutes the Microsoft Exchange Replication Services Crashes and Restart Automatically which leading to to (there is no more Endpoint error  in the EAC) which will prevent me to do anything in DAG Configuration.

I tried deleting and restarting the whole process but no Vain.

Please advise.

Exchange 2010 2 member dag with 1 database copy.

The mounted database has a clean shutdown state however the backup copy has a dirty shutdown state.

I have tried the following and nothing works.

REmoved .chck file

eseutil /r E03 /D "Mailbox Database Name"

eseutil /P "Mailbox database name.edb"

Still has a dirty shutdown.

How do you fix this? Why can't it rebuild from the main copy?
