Issues with a recovery database

Hello everyone,

I am trying to restore a mailbox from a backed up copy of a db. The backup copy was restored into a recovery db. Everything looks fine, database is mounted, no issues are being reported. When I run the New-MailboxRestoreRequest to restore the mailbox, I get the following error message in the Event Viewer and it fails.

FYI - I am using Exchange 2010.

The Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Replication service was unable to process jobs in a mailbox database.

Can someone help me fix this issue? At first I thought it might have been the backup copy that was bad so I used a previous one but got the same result.

Exchange DAG Cluster Quorum

Dears,

I would like to post a question about the cluster quorum. Technet says in case you have an odd number of servers then the majority of nodes have to be online to maintain quorum, and in case you have an even number of servers then you would have to have the majority of the voters online to maintain quorum (including the file share witness server). Well let's say I have a DAG with 2 nodes each in a site and the witness server in a third location. So site A hosts 1 Exchange server, site B hosts another Exchange server and site C hosts the witness server. My question is if the connection (the link) is disrupted between site A and site B will the cluster lose quorum? And the same question goes if the link is disrupted between site A and site C or site B and site C.

Thanks,

Elie

Exchange 2013 DAG Question

Headquarters Site (KEMP Load Balancer)

  • Namespace: mail.secretsauce.com

Building 1 = (Exch2013 SP1 & Windows 2012)

  • CAS & Mailbox role
  • MAPI Network 10.100.1.x
  • Replication Network 192.168.1.x

Building 2 = (File & Print Box = Quorum)

  • IP: 10.100.2.x

Building 3 = (Exch2013 SP1 & Windows 2012)

  • CAS & Mailbox role
  • MAPI Network 10.100.3.x
  • Replication Network 192.168.3.x

Goal = Site Resiliency

Question 1: Is there any reason why I couldn’t use mail.secretsauce.com for all virtual directories (Internal and External does  = mail.secretsauce.com)

(We are migrating mailboxes from a Exchange 2010 environment)

  • Set-ClientAccessServer ?
  • Set-OwaVirtualDirectory ?
  • Set-EcpVirtualDirectory ?
  • Set-WebServicesVirtualDirectory ?
  • Set-OABVirtualDirectory ?
  • Set-AutodiscoverVirtualDirectory ?
  • Set-PowerShellVirtualDirectory ?
  • Set-ActiveSyncVirtualDirectory ?

Question 2: EACH Exchange system has 4 NIC’s. EACH NIC is capable of 1 Gig speeds. IM assuming we will only need two NIC’s / Networks (MAPI & Replication).

  • Should I TEAM the 4 NICS (Making 2 NICS)?
  • Will the REPLICATION network utilize more than 1 GIG?

Question 3: Considering our IP addressing scheme, I’ve inserted the 192.168.x.x address just for demonstration purposes. I understand the REPLICATION network MUST be on a separate NETWORK.

  • Does this mean an arbitrary IP address like 192.168.x.x is acceptable to use on the replication network?
  • Does this mean STATIC routes must be inserted into the Exchange servers to ultimately pass communication to our core switch, thus to the Quorum and other Exchange server?
  • Does the Quorum need a 192.168.x.x (Is the Quorum part of the REPLICATION NETWORK?)
  • Just to verify, I’ve seen one NON-MS document reflecting the MAPI network NIC must be at the top of the BINDING list. Is this correct.
  • What is the minimum number of IP’s needed for each box? (2 ?)
Can site resiliency be achieved with this vague plan?

Restore Public folders using recovery database

I need to restore an Exchange 2013 public folder using a recovery database I restored from backup.  I'm familiar with the New-MailboxRestoreRequest and have used it to recover mailboxes but can't figure out the syntax for public folders.  Specifically, what should the values be for SourceStoreMailbox and TargetMailbox?

Exchange 2013 DAG with DR Site and Lagged copy

$

I am planning to create DAG with DR site (lagged copy) for Exchange 2013 and needed some advice.

Primary Site

4 Combo Role Servers in DAG

8-10 DB's with one passive copy on another Server

All user in Primary Site

DR Site

2 Combo Role Server in same DAG

Lagged copy of each DB spread between 2 Server

No access for users on DR site automatically but Will be required to be able to access OWA if primary site fails

Questions

Will this setup work

How do we make Lagged copy active if primary site fails

Can we use the Dynamic Quorum in Windows 2012 for this configuration? so no file share Witness is required. I know it will not dynamically configure quorum if complete Primary site fails

Mailflow stops when second HT/MBX server offline (EX2010)

We have our Exchange organization set up as follows:

  • 2 mailbox/hub transport servers in a DAG with a file share witness
  • 2 client access servers in a CAS array with NLB
  • 2 mail firewalls

For the last couple weeks, we've had a problem with a switch that causes a temporary loss of network access to one of the mailbox/hub transport servers. When this happens, mail flow stops completely. We're working to fix the issues with the switch. In the meantime, the HA that having 2 hub transport and mailbox servers in a DAG is supposed to provide isn't happening.

Now, I can immediately rule out the mail firewalls. When the problem is occurring, I can see that mail is stuck in the mail queues on the server that is still accessible. Everything on this server appears fine, and the mailbox databases are mounted here as expected after a fail over. Despite this, the server is still trying to send the messages to the now inaccessible server for delivery.

This is incredibly annoying as the interruption often happens overnight, which means it is getting fixed overnight...

Unable to connect to Outlook after *over

Hi

I am running Exchange 2013 CU3 (coexistence with 2007) with Outlook 2010 clients

There is a BigIP with 4 E2013 CAS Servers in the pool. I can create a profile to 3 different E2013 mailboxes on 3 different PCs.

When performing a switchover, it takes seconds and the database is mounted successfully

However, the Outlook clients all disconnect and wont reconnect. OWA works fine.

Rebooting the PC allowed Outlook to reconnect on one, even recreating a new profile on another did not. It has been 2 hours and still I cannot get Outlook to reconnect on 2 PCs.

Advanced Outlook logging warns "Network problems are preventing connection to Microsoft Exchange."

Outlook Connection Status shows "Established" (!)

This issue works whether I *over from E2013 Mailbox Server A to B or B to A - I cannot successfully *over!

Output from CAS Pool:

Resolve-DnsName mail.mydomain.co.uk

Name                                          Type   TTL   Section   IPAddress

----                                          ----  ---   -------    ---------

mail.mydomain.co.uk                           A      3600  Answer    nn.nnn.nnn.nnn

I must be missing something, can anyone help?

Thanks

CAS Connectivity flow

Hi All

I have a question which will be down to my lack of understanding, so apologies for this question in advance.

Im coming to grips with all the proxy/redirect decisions that exchange does, the one question I cant solve is the internal connection process for outlook as this will use RPC/HTTPS.

In exchange 2010 if you stretched a DAG across sites you would have 2 casarray objects, one at each site and users would connect via the RPCclientAcessServer that was specified on the MBX Database. In the event of site loss you could fail the DAG to siteB and repoint the SiteA CasArrary DNS record to the SiteB CasArrary VIP and this would be your failover.

How does this work in 2013 as you would probably have your clients connecting to mail.company.com for outlook anywhere, how do you ensure the clients go to their local site CAS VIP.

Hi,

I am planning to implement Exchange 2010 SP2 in high availability configuration across two data centers (Same AD site & and same IP segment but two different sites on 500Mtrs with 1 mili sec latency).

I have only four servers to use.two HP DL380’s and two IBM X3650M3.

Site 1 IBMx3650M3 (HUB, CAS and FWS) & DL380 (mailbox)

Site 2 IBMX36M3 (HUB and CAS) DL380 (Mailbox) Questions

1) Can I configure DAG in this situation?

2) Can I failover to secondary server in normal situation (for maintenance like security patch installation etc.)?

3) I believe there will be some manual tasks when site 1 goes down.

Can you please help me to list those tasks? 4) Is it possible to set secondary FWS for DR site?

Hi, I am getting errors in event viewer of my Mailbox servers running in DAG, I have exchange 2013 CU2, with Windows 2008 R2 OS.

I Have already disabled antivirus on these servers, and already excluded all database and log drives in antivirus options, but twice a week, passive copy of some databases are failed and I got this error in event ID.

msexchangerepl (5128) An attempt to open the file "F:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15\Mailbox\TMgmt-DB03\TMgmt-DB03.edb" for read only access failed with system error 32 (0x00000020): "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. ".  The open file operation will fail with error -1032 (0xfffffbf8).

For more information, click http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp.

I got one more alert like this

An error was encountered when attempting to
logon to 'SystemMailbox' on one or more database(s) for last 00:16:00

After Restart of one mailbox server on which passive copy is placed, all went ok.

If anyone have any suggestion / solution, kindly reply at your earliest.

Error occurs during reseed - the EDB file is being used by another process

$

Greetings,

We were notified today that one of our databases in an Exchange 2013 cluster is currently in a failed state. We have three servers - two at the primary site and one in the DR site. The database has a mounted and healthy copy on its preferred server, but the secondary copy is now failed with a pretty high CopyQueueLength.

I've done plenty of reseeds with Exchange 2010, and I understand that Exchange 2013 will do an automatic reseed in the event of a failure. However the auto-reseed is generating the following message:

Automatic Reseed Manager failed to execute repair workflow 'FailedSuspendedCopyAutoReseed' for database 'DB05'. Error: The Automatic Reseed Manager encountered an error: The automatic repair operation for database copy 'DB05\mb02' will not be run because one of the prerequisite checks failed. Error: There are no Exchange volumes mounted under root path 'C:\ExchangeVolumes', which are required for the Automatic Reseed component.

WorkflowLaunchReason: The seeding operation failed. Error: An error occurred while performing the seed operation. Error: The process cannot access the file 'M:\DB05\DB05.EDB' because it is being used by another process.

During the course of my investigation, I tried to rename the .edb file to .old and was told that the file is in use by Microsoft.exchange.store.worker.exe. There doesn't seem to be a way to kill this process, as every time I've tried I've been told that access is denied. I'm not even sure it's wise to kill the process anyway (I'm only trying to kill the one with the PID that matches the database).

Attempting to manually reseed the database generates a similar error to the one above. I've failed all the databases over to the other server and restarted the Information Store service as well as the Host Controller service, but so far I can't seem to get this file unlocked. One article I found did mention making sure that Exchange Servers is listed and given Read access to the folder. I did manually set this but I still see no change. I also verified that Symantec Endpoint Protection is set to exclude .edb files, and the automatic Exchange exclusions are preventing it from scanning the Exchange install locations.

I'm curious if anyone has any suggestions that I might have missed so far. This is confusing the daylights out of me and I'd like to be able to get this reseeded. I suspect that even a full server restart won't clear this up, so any help would be great. We're just starting to transition users over from Exchange 2007 to 2013, and I'd prefer to have a method of avoiding this in the future before we're in full production.

Exchange 2013 and DNS Round Robin downside?

$

Hi guys,

I have a question regarding Exchange Server 2013 (SP1) and the use of DNS round robin.

I have a customer that currently is running 2 CAS servers with NLB and we are currently investigating if it would be appropriate to move to a DNS RR solution so we can remove the CAS servers and install the CAS role on the Mailbox servers.

(yes I know that CAS with NLB and Mbx with DAG cannot be used on the same server)

What would be the downside of DNS RR?

Request 1 will go to first MBX server, Reqeust 2 to second MBX server, Request 3 to third MBX server and then start over again. If MBX server 1 goes offline, it will still be used within the DNS RR solution and clients will be redirected towards that server. But how will clients react? Will Outlook 2010/2013 timeout since the server is not responding and do a autodiscover lookup again and then hopefully jump on the DNS that points towards another server?

Is this true for pop/imap or a receive connector for SMTP relay aswell?

2 exchange 2013 multirole server and 1 addess for Outlook Anywhere. How to?

Hello everybody.

I'm coming to you with a question about my new Exchange 2013 infrastructure.

I have 2 Exchange 2013 SP1 servers. Both are multirole (CAS + MBX). My servers are Server12 and Server13.
I created a DAG which IP adderss is 192.168.3.30 (Servers IP are 3.31 and 3.32). Everything's working fine.

For CAS High Availability, I followed this thread : http://exchangeserverpro.com/exchange-2013-client-access-server-high-availability/

On my firewall, I use NAT to send https flow from my public IP address (mail.domain.fr, external domain published on internet) to point to mail.domain.org (internal domain, non published on Internet). The mail.domain.org alias is my record defined in my internal DNS to point to my 2 multirole server, as shown in the tutorial above.

I encounter a problem with external outlook anywhere. My problem comes with Outlook Anywhere which is not working fine when I redirect https flow to my cluster IP address (192.168.3.30) (DAG's address, corresponding to my servers). If I do the same redirection, but pointing to only one of my servers, it's working fine. In Exchange, external outlook Anywhere directory points to mail.domain.fr

But anyway, if this servers goes down, I have to change manually the NAT on my firewall. And I don't want to :).

How can I do ? Can I do something without a physical load-balancer?

Thanks

Hi All,

Our Environment consists of a single DAG. The dag copy went to failed and suspended state. I was unable to resume it.

When I try to reseed it I get the following Error.

The seeding operation failed. Error: An error occurred while performing the seed operation. Error: A timeout occurred while communicating with server 'server name" A connection could not be completed within 15 seconds.

Please help me to resolve this.
