Exchange 2013 DAG Replication

$

Hi Experts,

I currently have a DAG running on 2 nodes (Windows 2012 R2) with a File Share Witness. The mailbox databases has been seeded successfully to node 2.

My question is:

  1. How do I test to make sure that auto replication of the mailbox database is working between the 2 nodes?
  2. If auto replication is working, how often does it happen?
  3. The .edb files on both nodes does not seem to increase in size after the initial successful seed operation. Shouldn't it increase in size throughout the day?

Kind Regards

GMSS

I currently have Exchange 2013 and want to have a stretched DAG between to offices.  I am currently running Exchange on WS2012R2, but if I moved to WS2016 would I be able to use Azure Cloud Witness with Exchange 2013?  Or do I need to move to both Exchange and Windows Server 2016 in order to use the Cloud Witness feature?

DR site Design Options

Hello

In my primary site, I have 3 CAS servers load balanced and a two node Mailbox DAG. What I would like to do is install Exchange 2013 in my DR site.

The DR site will only be activated and receive traffic if the primary site goes down. So all Exhange traffic stays in the primary site and the DR site is acting like a warm standby.

1)What is the best way to architect this solution?

2)  Is automatic failover at the CAS and Mailbox server possible or does this have to be a manual switch over?

Thanks

Hi all,

I want to know if this is a supported configuration to setup DAG :

- 1 Exchange Server 2013 SP1 CU12  on Windows Server 2012 R2 (first DAG member)

-1 Exchange Server 2013 SP1 CU12 On Windows Server 2012 (Second DAG member)

your help is greatly appreciated

Exchange 2013 - WSB Backup of DAG database

We are running Exchange 2013 CU9 and are having issues with our 3rd party backup software. I am preparing to run WSB just to make sure we have good backups but its been so long since I ran WSB against Exchange I want to verify a couple things.

- I need to run the WSB backup against an ACTIVE copy of the DAG enabled database

- Will backing up against the active DB cause user downtime? ( obvious degradation possible)

Thanks!!

Tom

Exchange Logs are not purged

Dear Expert

Recently, we found that our exchange server log partition is going to be full and left only 10 Percent left. We have done full backup by using Symantec Backup Exec with the option to flush the log, but it seems that it didn't flush any of the logs although the full backup is running successful without problem.

we have on premise exchange server running exchange server 2010 SP3 and currently we are in the half way of doing migration to Office 365. Windows are all running Server 2008 R2. Exchange Transport and DB servers are totally separated for every server and all are Hyper V VMs.

Below is our current setup details:

Local Site:

DB01

DB02

Remote Site:

RDB01

RDB02

We have setup DAG between the Local and Remote Site called "DAG01". So, DB01 and DB02 are holding the active copy, whereby the passive copy will be at RDB01 and RDB02. However, due to issue with one of the remote site "RDB02" server that holding the passive copy of the DB01 and DB02, we have shutted down the  RDB02 VM completely as it is not the production anyway and we plan to decommission it after migration to Office 365 . In this case, we failed over the RDB02 to RDB01.

May i know whether because one of the member of the DAG is down, it will cause the Logs are not being flushed even though full backup is being performed daily?

Please advise on what should i do to solve the issue as there is the urgency on the log partition going to fill up soon.

Many thanks

Regards,

H

Cannot Add Server to DAG - FQDN Not Found

A little background:

Trying to create a DAG between 2 Exchange 2013 CU14 servers. I pre-created the CNO with the correct permissions and disabled the computer account. Verified that the computer object replicated to the various DCs. I have also checked that the dnsHostName attribute is populate correctly on that object.

I simply cannot get any Exchange server to join the DAG. I get the following error:

Failed opening with Microsoft.Exchange.Cluster.Shared.AmGetFqdnFailedNotFoundException: The fully qualified domain name for node 'CUSTOMER-EXDAG1' could not be found.

Unable to find an FQDN for CUSTOMER-EXDAG1

I have tried deleting the DAG, recreating it with a new name. etc.

Outlook connectivity issue during DAG failover

I'm new to 2016 Exchange, but here's my problem.  Exchange seems to be running fine in general.  We have two 2016 Exchange nodes (DAG).  In my mind, I'm thinking that when I need to perform maintenance on one node, I should be able to fail over to the second node and then reboot node 1 without impacting production.  It doesn't seem to work that way though.

First I:

1) Perform “server Switchover” to change the active databases away from the server I want to reboot to a DAG member that is not being rebooted:

Move-ActiveMailboxDatabase –Server ExchangeServerIAmRebooting

Once I verify that all mail stores are mounted on the other node, I reboot.  I'm expecting Exchange to remain available during the reboot, but immediately we start getting that error in Outlook that says that Exchange is not available (I forgot the exact verbage).

I was given some good advice in another Forum that my problem is probably not a problem with failover (that seems to be working), but a problem with the Outlook clients pointing to the rebooting node.  How do you configure Outlook to "look" at the active Node of the DAG cluster?  We do have a load balancer in our environment if it can be used.  But what is the best practice?

Also, is Failover Cluster Manager the best tool to perform failovers with, instead of the power shell command I have been running?

Thanks in advance!

Neil

Automatic failover of database in a DAG (Exchange 2010)

$

Hi,

I have a lab setup with 2 Exchange 2010 servers (same AD Site and same subnet) and 2 databases (DB1 & DB2) both part of a DAG named DAG1.

DB1 is mounted on Server1 and DB2 is mounted on Server2.

Now if I shut down or cut the network or disable the exchange services on Server2, shouldn't DB2 be automatically mounted on Server1 and shouldn't my clients continue to work seamlessly?

In any case it doesn't happen as such so maybe I did something wrong or maybe someone can enlighten me on the way a DAG is supposed to work in 2010.

Thanks in advance!

Deploying Exchange 2010 in DR Site

We have the current setup for Exchange in our DataCenter (DC):

Windows 2008R2 as Domain Controller - File Share Witness

DELL SonicWall ES3300 acting as EDGE Server (SMTP)

2x Exchange 2010 SP1 Servers (HUB, CAS, MB)

KEMP LoadMaster 2000 as Load Balance Solution

DAG of course for HA

We've already a DR DataCenter connected to the main DC with 2Mbps DIA/MPLS connection.

What is the best practice to have a passive DR setup for Exchange ?

NOTE: We can only have one Exchange Server in the DR DC.

NOTE: our Mailboxes Database size is 1.5TB right now.

I'm ready to respond to any question if needed.

Removing DAG member and re-adding

$

Hi,

We have Exchange 2013 DAG with 8 Servers.  6 have Active copies.  2 Servers have passive copies.  Server with passive copies have attached SAN volumes where DB copies are located.

We are in a situation where we need to remove the Exchange 2013 server from DAG.

because we have to move these server and attached to new storage.  I believe that I may need to do the following: -

Remove all the database copies.

Remove servers from DAG.

Then we will have stand-alone servers.

Shut down servers.

Move servers attached to new storage allocate separate volumes.  (Here I have a question those volumes needs to be exact same volumes with same folder names where Passive copies would be created once again)?

Add servers back to DAG and add database copies to it.

Is there anything else you think I should be doing?

Thanks,

Raman
